The Best of UVM COM

UVM is dedicated to teaching. And therefore, this page honors some of who I consider the best lecturers we have here. It is not an exhaustive or complete list, but it may make the point.

If you are considering coming to UVM for medical school, this page is meant to show you how many wonderful teachers we have. And if you are a med student at UVM, this page may help you decide when to sleep in. Just kidding.

Here they are, in no particular order:

***

Bob Macauley

One of the first lecturers you’ll have in med school.  We jokingly call him the Jesus of UVM, which is appropriate given his specialty is medical ethics. Takes potentially volatile topics and discusses them in a neutral yet common-sense manner.

Steven Everse

Love him or hate him, there’s no denying his passion for teaching. I found his explanations very easy to understand. Y0u’ll only get him for a few chemistry in CMB (Cell and Molecular Biology), which is a pity. He’s one of the few lecturers who gets so excited he has to walk around the entire lecture hall when teaching.

Bob Low

Whenever I think of the best teachers at UVM, Bob Low is right towards the top of my list. Teaches endocrine concepts, so you get him in CMB, HSF (Human Structure and Function) and then For lectures, he puts up a Powerpoint, an outline of his lectures, a series of quiz questions and a complete slide text that contains his thoughts on each slide. Small wonder his explanations are straightforward to understand.

Ellen Cornbrooks

Call her Ellen the Magnificent. Blurb coming soon!

Catchphrase: “Mother Nature”

Elizabeth Ezerman

Call her Betsy, please. Lots of students call her Dr. Ezerman, but trust me on this one. She has no ego. Straight-lipped, but very caring and compassionate. She’ll always be realistic with you, but she’ll never make you feel stupid. I’ve seen her go the extra mile to help students who get behind in the course. If you ever want to talk with her, don’t worry about not having too much to say. She’s very good at talking and keeping the conversation going.

Rose Christian

She is a presence: beautiful, radiant, cheerful and extremely helpful. Consider that she spent time doing art before she decided to do medicine, and now she’s an exceptional endocrinologist. I only saw her twice, once for a histology lab in HSF and once to give a lecture in Convergence (the final med school course). In both cases, she walked through the information quickly and informatively. Even if you are completely lost in lab, she’ll help you find your way.  Consider yourself blessed if you end up in her small group.
