For the Christians

I am an evangelical, non-denominational Christian. My faith informs how I live my life. If I hadn’t known of a few Christians before I came to Burlington in August 2009, I might have gotten overwhelmed and lost very easily.

If you are a Christian coming to Burlington (med student or not), this page is the resource that I wish I had been given. May it remind you that God is active in Vermont.

Christian Businesses/Organizations in the Burlington Area

CareNet Pregnancy Center
56 Colchester Avenue
Burlington, VT 05401
802-658-2184
Website: http://www.carenetburlington.org/
Blurb: CareNet is a non-profit Christian ministry for women, and one of the wisest medical ministries I’ve come across. They offer pregnancy tests, options counseling, ultrasounds, sexual education, resources for women who choose to keep the baby and counseling for women who’ve had an abortion. All of these are free of charge. They don’t preach to the people coming in or give out false/incorrect medical information. They see their Christian role as helping each woman who comes in determine what she believes by asking non-pointed questions, and then providing her with all the information she needs to make a decision for herself.

New Moon Cafe
150 Cherry Street
Burlington, VT 05401
Website: http://www.newmoonvt.com/
Blurb: New Moon Cafe is a wonderful coffee and sandwich place in the Church Street shopping area that’s owned by Christians. It also contains a spacious room down often used for open worship services and Christian events. Contact them for more info.

Christian Housing Opportunities in the Burlington Area

Finding housing in Burlington is TOUGH. I was blessed to discover a lovely Christian couple who rents rooms in their house, particularly to other Christians. They live in the Old North End and have four available rooms, two additional beds in the basement and upstairs and a sofa bed in the living room. If you are looking for a place to stay indefinitely or need a place to stay the night, this may be the place for you.

Rent: $115 per week (includes rent, food, utilities (gas/heat, electricity, trash, water, wireless internet, snow removal), washer/drier, off-street parking, and a furnished room)
Info: My husband (John, age 55) and I (Diane, age 49) own a 4-bedroom/2-bathroom house in the Old North End in Burlington and share our house with other Christians. We’ve done this for 20 years. I work at Champlain College and my husband works at Racine’s. The house is located a 20-minute walk from UVM campus or a 10-minute bus ride on the city bus. UVM students can take the city bus for free with their ID card. The bus stop is a short block from our house. We are a 10 minute walk to Church Street, which is the center of Burlington. We will have a room available in mid-August, maybe earlier.

We do not require a lease or damage deposit.

Everyone cooks one night a week for the house and we rotate weekly cleaning chores of the common areas. (We are not looking for gourmet cooks! Everyone seems to really enjoy this feature of our house as we get to share meals & conversation after a day of school/work if your schedule permits.)

We have an 11-year old chocolate-lab female dog, Hannah.

We do request references.
