About The Meager Med Student

The Meager Med Student is a radical blog two-fold experiment by Josh Pothen, a MD/PhD student at the University of Vermont College of Medicine.

The first goal: Chronicle his entire medical school experience each week from the beginning of med school in August 2009 until his graduation in 2016, in order to give perhaps the most detailed look at med school life.

The second goal: Fundraise to eliminate his student debt. MD-PhDs usually have their tuition paid for, but because of economic cutbacks, he will now have the same medical school debt as every out-of-state medical student at UVM. He is asking for $1 donations so he can emerge from school debt-free.

The Meager Med Student is updated weekly. Updates will include semi-daily posts about his school experiences throughout the past week, as well as Monday posts about his expenses for the past week.

About Josh Pothen

Josh Pothen is a first-year MD-PhD student at the UVM College of Medicine. He graduated from Cornell University’s College of Engineering in 2007 with a Bachelor’s in Computer Science. He is the oldest of his siblings, with two brothers and one sister who are all, as he concedes, smarter than him. His Dad is a professor of computer science, and his Mom is a homemaker turned preschool teacher. Born in the United States, Josh considers himself more of an American than an Indian in terms of culture, particularly since he does not like Indian food. His interests are numerous, as he would like to be a Renaissance man. A few include the Trinity, intellectualism, writing, film, music, dancing, wine, deep conversations, making other people laugh and The Pothen Podcast.

  1. dear Dr. Dr. Pothen,

I do enjoy reading your stories. They remind me of last year, except we took Histo second semester. Have a good holiday as the Brits say. Oh and by the whey, you’ll always be a Reniassance man in my book.

  2. Well well. I could have had you in my intro to Lit. class a few years ago, or my composition class. Alas, you’ve moved on and I only had a daughter go to Cornell (Iowa).
I’m writing a novel, and part of it involves the life of med students touched by the lives of the “donors” that they dissect. (“Prosect” now?) I’ll be reading your entries with great interest… I may even help feed you. Blog on young one, blog on.
